How does The Baby Shusher work?

Baby Shusher Review

Why The Baby Shusher Is An Absolute Must

The Baby Shusher with its rattle-like appearance is a unique baby sound machine that emits a ‘shush’ sound to soothe and relax your fussy baby. Any baby suffering from colic will be soothed instantly.

Just see for yourself:

Dr. Harvey Karp, author of the book “The Happiest Baby” has dubbed the “5 S’s: Swaddle, Side-Stomach Position, Suck, Swing and Shush” as the 5 distinct ways you can calm a baby.  These combined or sometimes independently will calm your baby and put them to sleep. The rhythmic shushing technique of The Baby Shusher is doctor-tested and approved, and can be very effective at soothing and calming babies.

All babies cry. That is their way of communicating. But if you determine that their cry means “I am sleepy!” your job as a parent is to help them sleep by all means necessary.  The Baby Shusher is a parents best friend because instead of “shushing” for 30 minutes straight this little tool does it for you. It is easily set to operate for the preferred time-frame (15 or 30-minutes) and equipped with a useful volume control to let you adjust the sound to a volume that is a little louder than the baby’s cries. It is a simple device that is not complex to use and easy to clean & take care of.

Features You’ll Love

A natural remedy for baby sleep, the Baby Shusher makes a very reliable addition to every parent’s toolbox to help soothe a crying or fussy baby. It is safe and it is practical. If you have been previously using a white noise app or using white noise from a YouTube channel, this means that you will need to have your cell phone, tablet or whatever device is emitting the noise near your babies head. Their can be some concerns about having modern technology ( such as tablets and cell phones ) which can pass radiation to your baby if too close. The Baby Shusher is free of radiation and safe to be near you baby.  Let’s  take a look at the most promising features of this unique sound machine:

Rhythmic sound

The Baby Shusher is a thoroughly tested technique and doctor-approved sound machine that is designed to break a baby’s crying episode and to naturally engage a calming reflex. The idea is that it relies on natural techniques and tactics that have been used by mothers for years. The intention of the rhythmic shushing sound is to remind your baby of the symphony of noises they are inundated with when inside the womb.

The womb for a baby is a very noisy place indeed with the constant whoosh sounds of blood rushing through the veins and other in utero noises (sound can reach 95-dB which is comparable to a loud vacuum cleaner). Even though the sound may seem a little harsh, it is in fact very calming for a baby.

Built with portability in mind

The Baby Shusher is built with portability in mind to make is easy to use no matter where you are. This sound machine is built to be not only compact and small (easily fits in a diaper bag ), but also easy to clean, which means it is a practical choice to use in the crib, stroller, or car seat. Unlike most other sound machines, this one is very portable, yet still loud enough.

Control the shushing volume

You have full control over the audio volume of the ‘shh sound’ which should be played at a volume louder than your baby’s cry. Adjusting the volume is easy and smooth and should be set to a level that matches the need and environment. Please note that the speaker is at the bottom of the device so if you put it upright you the shushing noise will be muffled. It is best to set the device on its side and not too close to your baby’s head or ears as it can be rather loud.

This shusher is safe and practical to use for newborns and up.

Timer options

The Shusher is built with a useful timer option to set the unit to run for the preferred amount of time. This lets you play its rhythmic shushing noise for a period of 15 or 30 minutes. Even though it can benefit to have a longer timer in certain situations, such as long car rides, you can easily restart it to run for a further cycle.

  • It works. Baby quickly calms down after hearing this
  • Long, smooth shh sound with a nice transition between each shh
  • Simple settings; volume adjuster is easy and smooth
  • Solidly built; even survives a drop on hard surfaces
  • Compact size, so easily used for travel
  • Colors are great so it is easy to find

  • Sound comes out of the bottom part, so you need to hold it or lay it down next to the baby
  • Only runs for up to 30 minutes; no ‘always on’ option to create the constant white noise
  • Batteries can be a little fiddly to replace

Overall, the Baby Shusher works as a good all-round soothing and calming tool if used properly. Even for the high-needs baby it is extremely effective and encourages your baby to change from screaming to content in a relatively short period. It appears to have a pretty solid build and even after dropping a few times on hard surfaces it still continues to work. The only real complaint is the inability to produce a constant sound cycle; 15 and 30 minutes is the only options. But the pros certainly outweigh the cons to make a great purchase. It sure beats the loss of oxygen and a dry throat after shushing for 30 minutes straight.

Thanks for your post, I find Baby Shusher very interesting and I am thinking about getting one for my niece who is around 3 months old by now. My sister was telling me how she wanted one but couldn’t afford to get it since my niece has so many other needs, like diapers and formula, etc plus my sister is a single mom so relying on one income. Anyway, she kind of hinted to me about this Baby Shusher so I went searching on google for reviews when I found your site I want to go ahead and buy it for my sister because it will make her so happy.

At first glance it looks like a giant bluetooth speaker!  I don’t see any buttons on it? How does it work?

This is great for travelling! It calms Noah in less than 5 minutes and this has to be some kind of record, he sleeps ok at night but it takes him forever to fall asleep. This would also make a great gift for any first time mom, it would save her a lot of trouble. I find those 30 minutes more than enough, I don’t think this is a con. The alternative will be a white machine if you want something to go on for hours and they’re cheap too.

This is an EXCELLENT gift for a first time mom. There are no cords or nothing poking out so it is safe to leave in baby’s bed.

I have looked around for different products that are meant to help babies fall asleep quickly. I have not heard of The Baby Shusher but it looks like it is ideal for getting your baby to nap during the day. I may just give this one a go.

Omg. I’m so glad that I found your page. My baby was starting to sleep so well and now that she’s teething, we’re lucky if she sleeps for 3 hours at a time. This product looks promising and I’m going to definitely look further into this!

This sounds really neat. I had a giraffe that had sounds and would turn off early too. That was the only downside, but it worked and that’s what I needed. I’ll pass this info on to friends that are expecting.

Very interesting. My baby might be a little too grown for it now but I have a friend who will have a baby in 3 months. This will make a great gift. Thank you.

Hi Sophia. Many thanks for your article and review of the baby susher. I must admit that I have never heard of one before but it sounds like a great piece of kit! Alas, my children are 10 and 11 now so don’t need a baby soothing system anymore but it sounds like there are many different uses for it as well. Just one question, is it a cordless device or does it need to be plugged in?

Hi Gail! Thanks for visiting my site 🙂 As a mom of older children, I am sure you can remember the days when your kids were babies and woke up throughout the night and things like white noise machines were a life saver 🙂 The Baby shusher is cordless and doesn’t have any lights or anything poking out of it that would harm baby. Its smooth and looks like a rattle and can sit in the crib while baby sleeps.

Lifesaver is right sophia, this product is awesome!! I sure wish this came about when i was having babies but now i know where to get one when my first grandchild gets here????????i love it

What a luck to find your website! I have been in search of a sound machine for my baby. I am definitely in love with the design of the baby shusher. Is not it the one that the BabySleepSite (they are professional baby sleep consultants) invented?
I like that the sound does not break in between the record as that is a big problem with our current sound machine. The only thing I am skeptical about is that it does not last all night. My baby got used to having white noise through the night.
Also, do you know if baby shusher has any lights on it? If it does, how bright are they at night?

Hi Anna 🙂 The Baby Shusher was created by two real parents named Chad & Katie Zunker, who birthed the product out of their own personal desperation at home while raising their 3 kids. There are no lights on it at all. It has 3 timer settings; 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 45 minutes. Unfortunately it doesn’t have a longer timer than that. If you are looking for something that can stay on for hours and has many varieties of white noise, other than “shushing” there is the CFS white noise machine. It can last up to 13 hours.
